The Anatomy of an Excel IF Function,
Part 4: Nesting Another Function Within an IF Statement

All we need to do is make one small correction to our formula. In E2, enter the following formula:

=IF(D2="", "", deposit-sum(D$2:D2))

Now copied the formula in E2 down through E21. Now we are getting the correct results!

Correct formula for the Expense worksheet

The graphic above reveals the copied formula in E3. Note the absolute row reference in our SUM function: SUM(D$2:D3). As the formula is copied down the column, the range will expand and the starting cell will always be D2 so that the sum of the all expenses in the range will be totaled and then subtracted from the deposit.

Now all we need to do is to enter a formula in G4 to display the newest balance. The following one will work:

=min(E2:E21)

If you have completed all four parts, please email me and let me know what you thought of these tutorials.
